Brooklyn Nets waive former UNC basketball standout and reserve guard Theo Pinson
The Brooklyn Nets have requested waivers on second-year wing Theo Pinson. The former University of North Carolina standout spend portions of the last two seasons with the team, but has been let go in order to create roster space that will allow the organization to finalize a new contract with free agent veteran guard Tyler Johnson.In 51 games with the Nets, Pinson averaged 3.9 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game, while shooting just under 31 percent from the floor and 21 percent from three-point range. He made an appearance in 18 games as a rookie, and 33 games during the 2019-20 season. He averaged better than 11 minutes per game during that stint, but struggled with consistency on the court. He did, however, connect on nearly 90 percent of his free throw attempts, and commit just one turnover and one foul per game.
When he wasn’t in Brooklyn with the Nets, he spent his time with the team’s G-League affiliate by the same name in Long Island. It was there that Pinson really shined, and earned the stripes that got him to the NBA on a two-way contract. In 43 games with Long Island, Pinson averaged 19.5 points, 6.1 rebounds, 5.9 assists and one steal per game. He shot better than 44 percent from the floor, 38 percent from beyond the arc and 83.5 percent from the charity stripe.
Where Pinson will end up at this point is unknown, but it would be surprising if he didn’t at least make a G-League roster considering how good he’s been there over the past two seasons.
